Thank you, Dr. Brown, for bringing Dr. John Wilsey on the Line of Fire to address some of the problems with David Barton’s presentations of American history.
As Dr. Wilsey points out, David Barton of Wallbuilders is very impressive with his knowledge of particular facts, which are mostly accurate. When Barton came to our church several years ago, his command of historical detail came across initially as being powerfully persuasive.
However, the issue with Barton is how he then collects and organizes these facts together, often omitting key pieces of information, in order to make his case. Wilsey’s discussion of Jefferson and Virginia’s manumission laws is but one example among many. But because Barton acts outside of any established peer-review protocol, there is little room for sufficient accountability.
