  1. I was thinking about the eunuch and a few other passages came to mind in regard to his statement:

““How can I, unless someone explains it to me?”

    Ephesians 4:11 (1 Corinthians 12:28)

    11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

    Hebrews 5:12

12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

The Word, the Spirit, and our elders in the Lord are to be our teachers, with the purpose that we all be able to teach.

  2. One more came to mind:

    1 Corinthians 1:21

21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

  3. And these:

2 Tim 3:10 But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance, 11 persecutions, afflictions, which happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra—what persecutions I endured. And out of them all the Lord delivered me. 12 Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. 13 But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

1Ti 1:3 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia—remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine,

Gal 1:6 I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7 which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.

Yes, unless we know the Scriptures, we will never be able to pick out the falsehoods that may creep in.

  4. Sheila,

Also, regarding the Church being referred to in terms of a City, this is the same as “The camp of the Saints,” in other words, the community of believers, whereas Jerusalem itself is actually referred to as “Sodom and Egypt” in Revelation, so I think this is a clear distinction.

  5. Nicholas,

I’m almost certain Jerusalem’s reference as being “Sodom and Egypt” concerns their judgement in 70 AD as I think Revelation, just like other prophets did, was written to those in John’s time as well as to us. It says, first, that “The Revelation of Jesus Christ” was a “letter” written to “seven churches” that was to be read out loud.

There’s no arguing that Jerusalem at that time was “were our Lord was crucified” and the judgement He pronounced on it together with the warning for believers to escape when they saw it surrounded was obviously for those of that time. As prophesy often does, it seems that the same scenario will repeat itself.

  6. I think the whole of the NT was completed before AD 70. A scholar once mentioned on one of those shows, on the History Channel or something, that the sacred writers would never have omitted a reference to the destruction of the Temple, which points to a pre-destruction provenance, and I think that makes sense.

  7. We are all welcome to disagree with each other. I was only stating that the internal and external evidence points towards AD 95.

  8. Revelation has no reason to speak of the destruction of the temple. If it happened 25 years previously, it would not be current item of discussion. The rest of the apostolic writings do seem to have been written before 70 AD…esp. since Paul and Peter were probably martyred a couple of years before and Luke dose not write of events past Paul’s life.

  9. Also, by no means do I mean to derail the conversation and lead it off onto a discussion over dates. We can talk about dates at a more appropriate time.

I wanted to wish you all a great weekend as I typically do not visit the site Saturdays or Sundays. See you all next week, have a blessed weekend.
