  1. Sheila,

Yes, I think it is an appropriate analogy. No hyperbole intended. They would do better to call themselves Prevented Parenthood. That would make more sense.

As far as the pill is concerned, it may seem like a lesser evil but people should avoid artificial contraception altogether. God gave us the marital act so that man and a woman would come together in the bond of matrimony to create a unity which would be fruitful. Sex should always be open to life, as God designed it from the beginning. Moreover, the pill can actually have an abortifacient effect, unbeknownst to many.

  2. Nicholas,

    Amen on all counts.

    Sheila,

Good points on Israel, Gaza and esp. the quote from Golda Meir.

    Shalom

  3. Thanks, Bo.

    Nicholas,

In a perfect world that would be the ideal scenario. 🙂

Didn’t know about the abortifacient effect of birth control pills.

  4. Sheila,

The first commandment was for man and woman to be fruitful and multiply. It was given before the law and was directed toward mankind…not just the Jews…not even just to the Catholics and Mormans.

    Shalom

  5. Thanks, Bo.

Yes, Sheila, in some cases, the pill can cause fertilized eggs to be expelled from the body in the menstrual cycle, much like an abortifacient. This does not always happen, but there is the risk. Most pharmaceutical corporations do not admit this.

    >> What in Numbers 5 do you see that you would call a prescription for an abortion?

It’s not what _I_ would call a prescription for abortion. I think all credible bible scholars say that. Read it yourself.

I’m a little surprised you aren’t aware of this passage since you have completely certainly on this issue and Numbers 5 is one of the few bible passages that speak directly to abortion.

    Here it is:
Numbers 5. I’ll edit it for length

15 then he is to take his wife to the priest. He must also take an offering of a tenth of an ephah of barley flour on her behalf. He must not pour olive oil on it or put incense on it, because it is a grain offering for jealousy, a reminder-offering to draw attention to wrongdoing. .. 17 Then he shall take some holy water in a clay jar and put some dust from the tabernacle floor into the water… 21 here the priest is to put the woman under this curse—“may the Lord cause you to become a curse among your people when he makes your womb miscarry and your abdomen swell. 22 May this water that brings a curse enter your body so that your abdomen swells or your womb miscarries.”

Since you are convinced that the bible unambiguously holds that a fetus is fully human, with full sanctity of innocent life, from the moment of conception, how do you deal with the passage?

It’s one of the few in the bible that actually speaks of induced abortion and it hardly seems protective of the fetus! It strikes me as completely indifferent to the fetus.

You guys beat me up when I say that the bible is ambiguous about abortion. This is one of the passages that leads me to a completely obvious observation.

  7. Bo,

    >>The scripture is very consistent. From conception to birth, the baby is called a child.

Bo, we’ve totally argued this one out.

The bible doesn’t say that. You make the bible say fit you personally believe.

I can’t go down that path with you because I believe it is very disrespectful of scripture to make it say something it does not.

  8. Greg,

Give us a break. Your are acting. Did you ever think that it is disrespectful to our creator to murder unborn babies…the ones that His word calls children? In other words, all from conception to birth. We did not totally argue this one out either. You conveniently excused yourself from dealing with the passages.

  9. Greg, I see nothing in Numbers 5 that is anything about abortion. Which Bible scholars are you talking about that don’t know the difference between a miscarry and an abortion?

  10. Greg, one of the curses for sin listed in Deut 28 is “thou shalt eat the fruit of thine own body, the flesh of thy sons and of they daughters,…”

Now wouldn’t it be silly to use that scripture to suggest that God thinks cannibalism OK, or that he isn’t against it?
