Is the God of the Old Testament Really a Good God?

  1. The apostle John who wrote so much about The LOVE of GOD also wrote about GOD’s wrath in revelation experiencing the same vision like Isaiah Holy HOLY HOLY is the LORD GOD almighty

  2. Thomas,

    We Evangelicals are liberal with the wrath of God but very VERY VERY stingy with the Love of God!

  3. This subject seems right up my alley 🙂

    Shabbat is almost here though. But here are a few teasers:

    Nu 15:16 One law and one manner shall be for you, and for the stranger that sojourneth with you.

    Isa 56:3 ¶ Neither let the son of the stranger, that hath joined himself to the LORD, speak, saying, The LORD hath utterly separated me from his people: neither let the eunuch say, Behold, I am a dry tree.
    4 For thus saith the LORD unto the eunuchs that keep my sabbaths, and choose the things that please me, and take hold of my covenant;
    5 Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off.
    6 Also the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to the LORD, to serve him, and to love the name of the LORD, to be his servants, every one that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and taketh hold of my covenant;
    7 Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.

    Mt 5:19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

    1Jo 2:3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
    4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

    1Jo 5:2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.
    3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

    Jas 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

    Ro 2:13 (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.

    Mt 24:11 and many false prophets shall arise and shall mislead many;
    12 and because lawlessness shall prevail, the love of the most shall grow cold;
    13 but he that has endured to the end, *he* shall be saved.

    Re 14:12 here is the endurance of the saints, who keep the commandments of god and the faith of jesus.

    Re 22:14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

    Shabbat Shalom

  4. How Does the Old Testament Apply to Believers Today?

    That was the question. I posted a few of the apostles answers. I could have quoted from Galatians which says the same thing as the rest of the Bible. It seems that there be few who care to discuss such things as of late.

    Shalom

  5. Bo,

    This is my busiest time of year and I’m working on answering someone elsewhere that’s taking a lot of my spare time. I wanted to come back to the other thread that was discussing the promises to Israel. I just don’t have many spare minutes lately.

    Maybe pick it up after a while.

  6. “How Does the Old Testament Apply to Believers Today?”

    > They pick and choose what they want to obey and what they don’t as they always have.

  7. Van,

    This might be the first time I almost agree with you 🙂 It might be a little more complex than you think, though.

    When are you going to answer the charge that you took Scweitzer out of context? Did you do it intentionally or were you duped by someone and then just regurgitate the lie? At least admit that you were wrong, even if you won’t tell us your motive. Don’t dodge or ignore this if you are an honest man. To refresh you memory, here is the challenge:

    “troll
    One who posts a deliberately provocative message…with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument.”- http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=troll

    Below is one of many examples of Van’s deception technique. He has been asked repeatedly to either admit that he has posted false testimony or to produce verification of his assertion. After being called on the carpet, he conveniently ignores all rebuttals and continues to regurgitate deception mixed with a huge amount of rhetoric, vitriol and insult. He is not to be taken seriously as scholar or a commentator. He is a troll, and nothing more.

    Van wrote:
    “’There is nothing more negative than the result of the critical study of the life of Jesus. The Jesus of Nazareth who came forward publicly as the Messiah, who preached the Kingdom of God, who founded the Kingdom of Heaven upon earth, and died to give his work its final consecration, never had any existence.’ – Albert Scweitzer (1875-1965)

    You just accused Albert Schweitzer of being classless, unqualified, and simple minded. Par for the course for people who have no respect for intelligence and education.

    Many scholars have tried to find evidence from outside the Bible that Jesus really existed. They came up with nothing, absolutely nothing as Dr. Schweitzer said.

    You people have bought into all the lies of religion and then you repeat these lies without any hint of a conscience. Calling me a liar when all I do is speak the truth just shows how backward your evil religion really is.”

    Sheila responded:
    “Well, it’s a classic move by you to rip a quotation out of context. Who is it you’re listening to? It makes no sense for you to drop what you think is a bombshell when all you’ve done now is make yourself look more foolish because you never considered that Google just might have Schweitzer’s book on line.

    Anyone who cares to can read further down the chapter and see that Schweitzer was referring to the historic Jesus as He was portrayed by the modern theological historians of his own time. His thought was that “That” Jesus never existed… His point was that we end up molding Him according to our modern way of thinking categorically. We essentially risk minimizing the astonishing profundity of His teachings.

    This link begins with the quote you gave us and then explains exactly what Schweitzer was getting at. The man made the cross he wanted on his own grave, for Pete’s sake.

    To date, Van still ignores the proof of his irrelevancy. He continues to persecute in the only way he as power to do. That power, in this instance, being the grace of Dr. Brown. Be sure to thank YHWH that Van is not in any governmental position where his bigotry and prejudice can do more harm.

    2 Timothy 3
    12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
    13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.
    14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;
    15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
    16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
    17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

  8. So strangely quiet is our Van
    With flashy paint that says it can
    Outrun every other man.

    You see the engine and transmission
    Were discarded with his permission
    But still it belches foul emission.

    How can it be that such a runner
    Has now become just a scunner
    While thinking he’s still a stunner?

    Deceit comes to the one that always thinks
    That his refuse never stinks
    At least that is what methinks.

  9. “It is an open question whether any behavior based on fear of eternal punishment can be regarded as ethical or should be regarded as merely cowardly.” Margaret Mead

    Actually that is not an open question anymore. It has been answered. Christianity only appeals to the base emotion of cowardice.

    ” A man full of faith is simply one who has lost (or never had) the capacity for clear and realistic thought. He is not a mere bleep, he is actually ill.” – H.L. Mencken

    How true.

  10. Van,

    Why do you not answer the charge against you in post #9? Why do you think that your unfounded faith is different than ours?

    You are every bit as much a coward and every bit as unclear and unrealistic in thought as those you accuse. You simply believe different authors than them and the presuppositions in your logic are different. The one thing that is different between them and you is your unwillingness to admit where you have been deceived and when you have lied and when you have been mistaken.

    Answer post #9, if you are intellectually honest…if not, just keep dodging the truth and posting deceit. Those that read your regurgitation do know the difference.

  11. —“Actually that is not an open question anymore. It has been answered. Christianity only appeals to the base emotion of cowardice.”

    And atheism only appeals to the human emotion of arrogance and pride.

  12. In answer to the blog that post 10 links to when one clicks on the name in red I posted the following as the first comment on the blog:

    Interesting that you think that there is no difference between the owner and creator of the universe and those that have been graciously allowed to be a part of it. When man of his own accord kills another man, it is murder. When he takes away another man’s money it is theft. But if he takes his own money and spends it, it is a perfectly logical and moral thing to do. If YHWH decides that His world or His land has been polluted by immoral and corrupt people that He created, he has every right to remove the pollution and those that pollute it. It is His responsibility.

    If there is no god, then all the deaths from the wars in the Holy land are nothing more than man using religion as an excuse for conquest. So If YHWH does not exist, He cannot be blamed and if He is the creator and owner of the universe, it is His to do with as He pleases.

    And there is no contradiction in YHWH’s character or doctrine from Genesis to Revelation. Too bad you were burned by religion and have chosen to reject truth as a reaction to your hurt, instead of rationally and humbly dealing with the issues in your heart.

    Shalom

  13. “If there is no god, then all the deaths from the wars in the Holy land are nothing more than man using religion as an excuse for conquest. So If YHWH does not exist, He cannot be blamed….

    > This is what we atheists have been saying all along. The believers in God are to blame for the crimes committed in the name of this false God. That would be YOU.

  14. Why should anyone listen to you when you have been proven wrong and won’t admit it? Why should we listen to a troll?
